Match Play Quarterfinals Have Husker Flavor

Three Nebraska men's golf letterwinners will participate in the quarterfinals of the Nebraska Match Play Championship Saturday at Willow Lakes Golf Club in Bellevue.

Defending champion and Husker senior Brandon Crick will take on Kyle Huus, of Sidney. Crick defeated Patrick Hanzel 1 up and David Ping 3 and 2 on Friday to advance to the final eight.

Two former Huskers will also play for a chance to reach the semis on Saturday. Mike Vanier, who played at NU from 2000-01, will take on Texas A&M's John Hurley, fresh off the Aggies' national championship this spring. Ryan Nietfeldt, who earlier on Friday defeated Nebraska Head Coach Bill Spangler 1 up, will face Craig Bakke of Bellevue. Nietfeldt competed at NU from 1995-99. Both Vanier and Nietfeldt needed a playoff just to qualify for the match play portion, but the 61 and 63 seeds, respectively, have rattled off a string of victories to reach the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Saturday, and a 36-hole final on Sunday will determine the champion.
