Irving, Texas - Nebraska women’s tennis player Mary Weatherholt earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors on Wednesday afternoon, the conference office announced. Weatherholt and fellow freshman Madeleine Geibert also earned All-Big 12 honors in singles play.
Weatherholt went 36-4 in singles play this year, including a 20-2 mark in the spring and a 10-2 record in the Big 12. She shattered NU’s all-time single-season wins record, which was previously held by Sandra Noetzel who won 30 matches in 1998-1999. She is just the second Husker to even earn Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors, joining Kim Hartmann who won it in 2006.
Geibert has a fantastic freshman season as well for the Huskers. She finished the year with a 26-8 singles record, including a 15-5 mark in the spring. It’s the first time since the 1998 season that Nebraska has had two players named to the All-Big 12 singles team.
Both players finished the year strong, as Weatherholt won her final nine and Geibert her final four singles matches to close the season.
Oklahoma’s Ana-Maria Constantinescu was named player of the year, as the senior ended her career with a perfect 11-0 mark at No. 1 singles in Big 12 play.
