Lincoln - The Nebraska swimming and diving team won the Life Skills Award of Excellence, and C.J. Bray and Mariah Hutchinson were given Life Skills Hero awards over the weekend, as Nebraska honored its top students and role models at the 2009 Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet on Sunday and the Hero Leadership Recognition Banquet on Monday.
The swimming and diving team was honored with the Life Skills Award of Excellence for outstanding work in the fields of leadership, volunteerism and career development, beating out 18 other NU varsity sports for the honor. The award was given out during the Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet on Sunday.
15 Huskers also earned medallions at the banquet, given to those who have at least a 3.0 GPA. Five Huskers ? Katilin Arntz, Emily Burbach, Julie Giehl, Kelsey Ida and Sarah Ziegelmann ? earned gold medallions, awarded to those who have a 3.75 GPA or higher.
On Monday, Bray and Hutchinson received Life Skills Hero awards for demonstrating outstanding leadership and citizenship and becoming role models in the process. They were two of 30 Husker student-athletes honored for their individual contributions to Nebraska’s outreach efforts on Monday, including track and field and cross country student-athlete Betsy Miller, who earned the Gerard Scholarship of Excellence. The award represents Nebraska’s highest individual honor in its nationally prominent Life Skills program.
Associate Athletic Director Keith Zimmer said Husker student-athletes contributed more than 3,300 hours of community service in 2008.
