Huskers Advance to Semifinals at Big 12 Championships

Norman, Okla. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships with a 4-0 win over Colorado on Friday afternoon. The Huskers will face No. 1-seed Baylor on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The Huskers, who defeated the Buffaloes just a week earlier 5-2, were dominant all the way through the match. Nebraska had lost its previous four doubles points, but on Friday won the first two completed doubles matches, at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, to take a 1-0 lead going into singles play.

Mary Weatherholt and Jana Albers quickly made it 3-0 Nebraska as they both won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Madeleine Geibert sealed the win for Nebraska with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles, giving NU its fourth point, and the rest of the matches weren’t finished due to the team result already being decided.

“Today, I think the difference was the way we started the match in doubles,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “It’s been a while since we got a doubles point. Our energy was right from the beginning of the match to the end of the match.”

Nebraska will face Baylor, ranked No. 5 nationally, on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Bears defeated Missouri 4-0 on Friday.

“Tomorrow, we get a chance to play against one of the better teams in the country and I think the kids are excited about that opportunity,” Jacobson said.
