Lincoln - Five members of the Nebraska women's golf team earned first-team academic All-Big 12 honors when the conference announced its academic award winners on Tuesday, April 21.
Nebraska was one of two Big 12 women's programs with five or more first-team academic All-Big 12 honorees, joining Kansas, which had six first-team selections.
Senior Megan Place (Omaha, Neb.) and juniors JC Stevenson (Grand Island, Neb.) and Charlotte Wendner (Bjarred, Sweden) all claimed first-team academic all-conference honors for the second time in their careers.
Sophomores Mary Kate Bird (Kansas City, Mo.) and Rachel Hanigan (Dunlap, Iowa) made their first appearances on the academic All-Big 12 team.
Place, a fifth-year senior at Nebraska, owns a 3.758 GPA as an art history and criticism major, while Stevenson carries a 3.696 GPA as an elementary education major. Hanigan sports a 3.611 grade-point-average as a biological systems engineering major, while Wendner carries a 3.5 GPA in business administration. Bird, who owns Nebraska's top stroke average on the course this season, adds a 3.231 GPA in business administration.
Nominated by each institutions's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic All-Big 12 women's golf team consisted of 36 first-team recipients and nine second-team honorees. First-team members must maintain a 3.20 GPA or better, while second-team honorees must carry a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and participate in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
