Boulder, Colo. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team won its second consecutive road match on Sunday afternoon, beating Colorado 5-2 in Boulder. The Huskers relied on strong singles play to take the victory after losing the doubles point, winning five of the six singles matches, as they improved to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the Big 12. Colorado fell to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in the Big 12 with the loss.
The Huskers once again got a win at No. 2 doubles from the freshmen team of Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg, who won 8-2 for their fifth doubles victory in a row. Colorado took No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, however, to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Nebraska’s singles play overpowered the Buffaloes, as it quickly erased the 1-0 deficit, winning the first five completed singles matches to clinch the match, similar to its match on Friday against Missouri. After losing the doubles point to the Tigers, the Huskers came back to win four of the six singles matches and win 4-3.
Madeleine Geibert got the Huskers on the board first with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, followed by Weatherholt’s 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, her 34th singles win of the year. Jana Albers made it 3-1 Nebraska with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. Wiveca Swarting clinched the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Swarting reached 30 singles victories on the year with the win, which ties for second place on the all-time single-season wins list, just behind Weatherholt.
Holmberg won at No. 5 singles to give NU its fifth point of the match before Stephanie Evans lost in three sets at No. 6 singles to make it a 5-2 final.
The Huskers will prepare for the Big 12 Championships, which take place next week in Norman, Okla. NU will make up its match with Texas Tech on Wednesday, April 22, in Norman, just before the start of the championships. The match carries significant Big 12 seeding implications. If the Huskers can beat the Red Raiders and then Colorado loses to Baylor, who will also face off on Wednesday in Norman, then NU will take the No. 4 seed in the tournament and earn a first-round bye.
