Wendner Finishes Strong at Lady Buckeye

Columbus, Ohio - Charlotte Wendner closed a solid tournament with a final-round 77 to finish in a tie for 26th to lead the Nebraska women's golf team at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational on The Scarlet Course Sunday.

Wendner, a junior from Bjarred, Sweden, produced NU's top three rounds of the tournament with rounds of 79, 78 and 77 to finish at 234. Fellow junior JC Stevenson managed a tie for 48th with a 240, after posting a final-round 80. True freshman Natalie Gleadall added an 80 of her own in the third round of the 54-hole event on the par-72, 6,228-yard layout at The Scarlet Course. Fellow freshman Maddie Sheils rounded out the Huskers' scoring with a 94 on Sunday, as NU finished 15th in the the 15-team field at 977.

The Huskers, who were already hindered by the loss of sophomore Mary Kate Bird to a wrist injury after Saturday's first-round, were unable to overcome more adversity between the second and third rounds. Sheils' first-round 80 was dropped from the Huskers' opening-round score by disqualification following Saturday's second round. The disqualification forced NU's first-round score to slip three strokes from a 319 to 322, as the Huskers had to count Bird's opening-round 83, dropping them out of a tie for 13th into 14th place before Sunday's golf began.

With only four golfers in the event on Sunday, Nebraska settled for a final-round 331, counting Wendner's 77, a pair of 80s from Stevenson and Gleadall and Sheils' 94.

The hosts from Ohio State cruised to the team title with a three-round score of 895, 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Kent State. Washington finished third, 16 strokes off Ohio State's pace, with a 911. The Buckeyes' In Hong Lim added an individual title for Ohio State with a three-round score of 217. Lim held off Michigan State's Laura Kueny, who finished just one shot back at 218. Both golfers fired final-round 75's on Sunday. Washington's Anya Alvarez took third at 220 after a final-round 71.

Nebraska returns to action at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas, April 24-26.
