Lincoln -Georgia's Courtney Kupets put the finishing touches on one of the most
dominant national championship performances in NCAA history by claiming three
individual national titles during Saturday night's Individual Event Finals at
the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.
Just 24 hours after leading Georgia to its fifth consecutive NCAA team title with perfect 10's on bars and vault to finish off a 39.90 cumulative score in all four events, Kupets started the individual event finals with a resounding 9.95 to win the bars title. She was even better on beam, uncorking a 9.9875 to run away with her second individual title of the night, before capping her championship weekend by tying LSU's Ashleigh Clare-Kearney for the floor exercise crown with a 9.95.
Clare-Kearney added a second title of her own on the night by winning the vault title with a 9.90. Clare-Kearney became the first LSU gymnast in history to win a pair of national crowns. LSU teammate Susan Jackson was the runner-up on vault with a 9.8938, while Kupets and Utah's Kristina Baskett tied for third at 9.8563.
Earlier in the championships, Kupets became just the second three-time NCAA All-Around champion with a 39.80 on Thursday. Her four individual national titles in 2009 tied Kentucky's Jenny Hansen (1995) and Utah's Missy Marlowe (1992) for the most in an individual championships in NCAA history. Kupets, who is a 15-time All-American, entered the championships as a five-time national champion and concluded her career with an NCAA-record nine individual national titles.
