Huskers Hit the Road for Two Conference Matches
The Nebraska women’s tennis team is closing in on its final regular season matches as it takes on Missouri and Colorado in two big road matches this weekend. The Huskers, who are sitting in fifth place in the Big 12 standings, are looking to finish the season strong and earn a top-four seed in the Big 12 Championships, which would give them a first-round bye. If NU can pull off victories in its final three matches, they will have a strong chance of claiming a top-four spot.
The Huskers slipped up last weekend, losing to KansasState 5-2 on the road. NU was playing without No. 1 singles player Madeleine Geibert, who injured her leg in the previous match against OklahomaState. Geibert is expected to be back for this weekend’s matches, however. Nebraska fell to 12-6 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12 with the loss to the Wildcats.
Nebraska travels to Norman, Okla., next week for the Big 12 Championships. The Huskers will also play Texas Tech at Norman on Wednesday, April 22, making up a match that was postponed earlier in the season.
Scouting the Tigers
The Missouri Tigers are in the midst of a five-match losing streak, including a 4-3 loss last weekend to Colorado. The Tigers are led by seniors Sofia Ayala and Jessica Giuggioli. Ayala has 23 singles wins on the year while freshman Jamie Mera has 22 wins.
Scouting the Buffaloes
Senior Franziska Jendrian leads the No. 53 Colorado Buffaloes this season with 23 singles wins. Two other CU players have 20 wins, including juniors Camila Belasi and Melisa Esposito. The Buffaloes have lost two of their last three matches after winning their previous five, and currently sit in fourth place in the Big 12 with a 6-2 conference record
