Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team beat Oklahoma 6-1 in its final home match of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Huskers won their second match in a row and improved to 12-5 and 4-3 in the Big 12. Freshman Mary Weatherholt’s record-setting 31st singles victory of the season highlighted the match, which saw NU earn its 11th home win of the season.
The Huskers started off the match by winning the doubles point for the first time in six matches. Jana Albers and Madeleine Geibert earned their team-high 12th doubles win of the year with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg won 8-3 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Nebraska didn’t let up in singles play, and with the exception of Geibert having to retire due to injury at No. 1 singles, the Huskers were dominant all the way through, winning each singles match in straight sets.
“Our doubles really gave us a spark in singles play,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “The first set of all five singles matches were all dominant, and it was a reflection of the positive emotion we had going into singles play.”
Geibert, who injured her leg in the first set of her match, isn’t expected to miss much time as the injury doesn’t appear to be serious.
Weatherholt was the story of the day as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, giving her 31 wins on the year, including 15 this spring. The freshman from Prairie Village, Kan., has been dominant all season, compiling a 31-4 record combined in the fall and spring seasons. She broke Sandra Noetzel’s record of 30 wins that she set in 1998-99, one that had stood for over 10 years.
“What a great day for Mary to set the record,” Jacobson said. “Sandra’s record lasted a long time, and I’m sure she’ll be happy for Mary when she hears about it.”
Meanwhile, Wiveca Swarting is also quietly climbing up the all-time single season wins list, as she won her 28th singles match on the day with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. She is currently sitting in a tie for third on the charts.
Albers, Holmberg and Stephanie Evans each picked up victories for the Huskers as they completed the 6-1 victory.
Nebraska travels to Kansas State next Saturday for a match with the Wildcats. First serve in Manhattan, Kan., is set for 1 p.m.
