Huskers Surge Past Panthers

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team moved to 9-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory against Northern Iowa on Saturday morning at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers rallied back after losing the doubles point for the first time all season to win all six singles matches.

Northern Iowa, which had won eight straight matches coming into the day, came out hot, winning Nos. 2 and 3 doubles by 8-6 scores to give Northern Iowa a 1-0 lead going into singles play, the first time the Huskers had lost the doubles point all season.

The Huskers responded well playing from behind for the first time all season. Mary Weatherholt (No. 2 singles), Wiveca Swarting (No. 4) and Jennifer Holmberg (No. 6) all won their singles matches easily, giving Nebraska a 3-1 lead. Madeleine Geibert (No. 1) and Jana Albers (No. 3) sealed the win for the Huskers with straight-set victories of their own. Stephanie Evans rounded out the scoring for Nebraska with a three-set win at No. 5 singles.

“We found out a lot about our team today when we went into singles behind a point,” NU Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “It was real positive, and there was a lot of great energy. That's the thing we did best today, not let our doubles play affect our singles play.”

Nebraska has one match on the schedule for next weekend, as it plays Big 12 opponent Kansas on Friday, March 13, at the Nebraska Tennis Center. First serve for the match will be at 3 p.m.
