Huskers Taken Down by Bears

Waco, Texas ? The Nebraska women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback at the hands of No. 4 Baylor on Saturday afternoon in Waco, Texas. The Huskers fell to 10-2 on the year, while Baylor improved their record to 11-4.

The Huskers were able to win at No. 3 doubles, but fell at Nos. 1 and 2 as Baylor took a 1-0 lead into singles play. The Bears, who boast three ranked singles players, swept all six singles matches to win 7-0.

Freshman Mary Weatherholt, who recently moved into the top five in NU’s all-time single season wins list, lost her first match of the spring season, falling 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to Jelena Stanivuk, the No. 40 player in the country.

Fellow freshmen Madeleine Geibert (No. 1) and Jennifer Holmberg (No. 6) each went into third-set supertiebreakers but were unable to emerge with a victory. Geibert in particular suffered a heartbreaker, losing 14-12 in the final set tiebreaker.

Nebraska will hope to slip out of their mini two-match slide with a match Monday at Texas Tech. The Huskers return home next Friday, March 27, against Texas A&M.
