Browne and Jones Earn Top-Six Finishes at NCAAs

Lincoln ? Two Huskers wrestled through the consolation bracket to claim top-six finishes during Session V of the 2009 NCAA Championships and help Nebraska remain in the top four with 74.5 team points. Iowa climbed back to the top of the field with 97.5 points, while Ohio State (88) is second and Iowa State (80.5) is third.

Brandon Browne picked up crucial points for NU with a 7:18 fall of sixth-seeded Steve Anceravage of Cornell, but lost to fifth-seeded Raymond Jordan of Missouri 4-0 to finish fourth. Browne went 30-5 during the 2008-09 season to end his career at 79-15 and claim two All-America honors. He finished seventh on NU’s top 10 career win-loss percentage with a .840 mark.

Browne gave up a first-period takedown to Anceravage to fall behind early, as Anceravage racked up the riding time advantage. Browne cut him to start the third and earned his first takedown of the bout 30 seconds later. Another cut and another takedown by Browne sent the match into overtime at five apiece. Browne earned the win quickly with a takedown 12 seconds into the extra period, and pinned him shortly thereafter.

Against Jordan, Browne was taken down early again, as the Tiger earned over two minutes of riding time in the first period. Jordan picked up an escape in the second and rode Browne out the entire third period for the 4-0 win.

Jones went 0-2 during the session, dropping decisions to second-seeded Phil Keddy of Iowa (6-1) and ninth-seeded Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming (9-2). Jones sixth-place finish earned him his first career All-America accolade, as he went 34-9 in 2008-09 to move his career record to 80-37.

In his first match of the day, Jones surrendered an early takedown to Keddy, and was unable to close the gap on the Hawkeye late. Keddy escaped in the second and Jones earned an escape of his own in the third to come within two points, but Keddy claimed the winning takedown with 53 seconds left.

LeBlanc claimed two first-period takedowns to take a 4-1 lead into the second, and earned an escape 15 seconds into the second. Jones escaped in the third to cut the lead to three, but surrendered a late takedown for the final margin.
