Wendner leads Huskers at Aztec Invite

Chula Vista, Calif. - Junior Charlotte Wendner tied for 21st individually to help the Nebraska women's golf team to a 12th-place finish in an 18-team field at the Aztec Spring Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.

Wendner, a native of Bjarred, Sweden, closed the three-day tournament with a 54-hole score of 231 (72-79-80) to lead the Huskers. Fellow junior JC Stevenson (Grand Island, Neb.) added a tie for 38th at 236 (72-86-78).

Freshman Natalie Gleadall (Stratford, Ontario) tied for 50th at 240 (79-83-78), while sophomore Mary Kate Bird (Kansas City, Mo.) settled for a tie for 60th at 242 (76-84-82). Sophomore Rachel Hanigan (Dunlap, Iowa) rounded out the Husker lineup in 79th  at 252 (83-89-80).

Nebraska finished the tournament with a three-round score of 947 on the par-72, 6,187-yard layout at the Salt Creek Golf Course. After opening the tournament with a 299 to sit in fifth place after the first 18 holes, the Huskers battled the elements in Monday's second round, which was postponed before NU finished the round on Tuesday morning.

The Huskers struggled with a 332 in the second round, as 11 of the 18 teams in the field posted rounds of 325 or higher over the second 18 holes. Nebraska managed a 316 in the third round.

San Jose State won the tournament with a three-round total of 900, six strokes in front of UC Irvine at 906. San Francisco finished a distant second at 914, while Arkansas-Little Rock took fourth at 921.

UC Irvine's Hillary Packard claimed medalist honors with a two-over-par 218, while Long Beach State's Lee Lopez, San Diego State's Malin Enarsson and San Jose State's Erica Moston tied for second three shots back at 221.

Nebraska returns to action next weekend at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in South Carolina. Play begins with 18 holes on Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Clubs. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
