The Nebraska rifle team was defeated by the Memphis Tigers, 4,568 to 4,563, Saturday at the NU Rifle Range. The match was the regular season finale and final home match for NU this season. Head Coach Morgan Hicks said she was disappointed with the loss.
"The girls were just not there, and you could tell that they were trying, but it seemed like when one took a step forward another would take two steps back," Hicks said.
While Amanda Jeffries won the smallbore title and posted the top combined score in the match at 1,150, Nebraska shot 37 points below its season average of 4,600. The score of 4,563 matched a season low and NU's 2,300 air rifle score was the lowest of the season by six points. The Huskers scored six points better than Memphis in smallbore, but were outshot by 11 in air rifle.
The loss dropped the Huskers to 6-6 heading into the NCAA Qualifiers in Murray, Ky., on Feb. 14-15.
"It was a hard day and all we can do now is move on from it and prepare as best we can for NCAA Qualifiers in one week," Hicks said.
