Huskers Sweep Bluejays

Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team opened up its spring season on Friday afternoon with a 7-0 win over Creighton at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers moved to 23-0 all-time versus the Bluejays with the win, and have now swept 11 straight non-conference home duals dating back to last year.

“Creighton is much improved from year’s past, so it was great to get a competitive match in this early in the season,” NU Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “It was a great start to our season.”

The Huskers started off the match by winning all three doubles matches, including an 8-1 win by junior Wiveca Swarting and freshman Jennifer Holmberg at the No. 2 spot. NU went into singles play looking to build on its 1-0 lead.

Freshman Mary Weatherholt got the scoring started for Nebraska in singles play at the No. 3 position. After dropping the first game, Weatherholt rattled off 12 straight games against Creighton’s Nicole Nakaoka to win the match 6-1, 6-0. Shortly after Weatherholt’s victory, sophomore Jana Albers cruised to a victory at the No. 5 spot by the same 6-1, 6-0 score. Stephanie Evans clinched the match for Nebraska with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 6 singles position.

The Huskers went on to win the final three matches, including freshmen Madeleine Geibert’s 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot and Jennifer Holmberg’s 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 position. Swarting won at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-1.

Jacobson was impressed by the play of Nebraska’s three freshmen, who took up three of the top four singles spots.

“It was their first time playing a collegiate match, so there were some nerves,” Jacobson said. “But they played with tremendous passion, and showed that even though you’re a freshman, you don’t have to play like one. We’re expecting big things out of those three this year.”

Nebraska continues play next weekend with a pair of matches at the Nebraska Tennis Center, taking on Wyoming on Friday, Feb. 6, and then hosting Drake on Sunday, Feb. 8.
