Huskers Split Weekend

The Nebraska rifle team defeated the Mississippi Rebels on Friday, then finished second in a three-way match with the Rebels and TCU Horned Frogs Saturday.

On Friday, the Huskers outshot the Rebels 4,591-4,579. Amanda Jeffries captured the overall individual title with a combined score of 1,155. Ryann McGough's 576 air rifle score was a match best.

"We won, but it wasn't a good score," NU Rifle Coach Morgan Hicks said. "It was a little tough today with it being a Friday and some of the girls trying to juggle classes. I think we just weren't as focused as we needed to be. We just need to stay consistant and we will be fine."

One bright spot for the Huskers was the performance of Ashley Lane, who recorded season highs in both air rifle (583) and smallbore (567).

"That was great to see after all the hard work she has been putting in," Hicks said.

On Saturday, the Huskers faced off in a three-way match with the Rebels and Horned Frogs. TCU scored best with a 4,619. Nebraska was second with a 4,577, and Mississippi was third at 4,573. Ryann McGough was the smallbore champion after shooting a 578.

"We didn’t shoot what we are capable of shooting," Hicks said. "I am disappointed with how our performance turned out. We are not out of the running to qualify to make it to NCAAs, but we really need to start stepping it up and putting up some higher scores as a team."

Hicks said the Huskers are getting good scores from some shooters, but not everyone on the same day.

"We all need to come together and shoot good all on the same day. I hope that day is qualifiers so that we can make it to NCAAs," Hicks said. "We are cutting it a little close this year, but I have confidence that my team will pull through. We have two weeks before our last home match. We are going to train hard and be ready when Memphis comes to town."
