Huskers Fall to Cyclones

Lincoln - Yvonne Turner and Dominique Kelley each scored 12 points for the Huskers, but Iowa State connected on 11-of-26 three-pointers, as the Cyclones shot their way to a 62-48 win over the Nebraska women's basketball team on Saturday night at the Devaney Center.

Nebraska slipped to 10-8 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12, while Iowa State improved to 15-4 and 3-2 in the league.

Alison Lacey led Iowa State with 14 points, seven assists and six steals, but scored just two points in the first half when the Cyclones built a 39-27 lead on the strength of a late 11-0 run. Lacey hit all four of her three-pointers in the second half, as ISU held off repeated Husker rallies that cut the Cyclone lead to two possessions.

The Huskers cut the Iowa State edge to 43-37 on Tay Hester's runner with 14:14 left, but the Cyclones responded with a 10-0 run that included back-to-back triples by Lacey and Kelsey Bolte, who finished with 13 points on the night.

Nebraska stopped the run with a 7-0 surge of its own over the next 1:30 to trim ISU's lead back to 53-44 with 5:52 left, but the Huskers managed just four points the rest of the way in producing a season-low 48 points.

Nicky Wieben added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones, while Amanda Nisleit contributed nine points and a team-high nine rebounds to lead ISU to a 34-29 rebounding edge. Heather Ezell also pitched in nine points, all on three first-half three-pointers.

Hester finished with nine points off the bench for NU, while Kaitlyn Burke pitched in eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Unfortunately, the Huskers hit just 4-of-16 three-point attempts on the night. For the game, NU outshot ISU from the field, 44.7 percent (21-47) to 39.3 percent (24-61), but ISU's plus-five advantage on the boards and plus-eight edge in the turnover column led to 14 more attempts for the Cyclones. Neither team attempted a free throw in the second half, with ISU outscoring NU, 3-2 at the line in the first 20 minutes.

Catheryn Redmon led NU's rebounding effort with 12 boards and matched her career-high with five blocked shots, but the Cyclones held Redmon and fellow forward Cory Montgomery to just seven total points on the night.

"Iowa State plays defense inside-out, and they do a great job of not giving you any looks inside," Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. "They also did a great job on the glass, and a lot of times, their offensive rebounds led to three-pointers. We turned the ball over too many times and didn't do a good enough job on the boards to win the game."

Iowa State carried a 12-point lead into the locker room at the half after outscoring Nebraska 16-7 in the final four minutes of the half. The Huskers trailed just 23-21 with 3:59 left in the opening period, before Bolte erupted for eight straight points in just 1:20 to give ISU its first double-digit lead at 31-21. Nisleit then drained ISU's fifth three of the half to push the lead to 34-21 before a three-point play by NU's Montgomery stopped ISU's 11-0 run.

Toccara Ross then connected on her first three-pointer of the season to push the lead back to 13, before Turner hit NU's first three of the half to trim the ISU edge back to 10. Lacey then hit her first shot of the game for the Cyclones on a driving layup to end the half.

The Huskers trailed despite hitting 50 percent (12-24) of their shots in the first half. NU also outrebounded ISU, 15-14, in the first half, but committed 15 turnovers compared to just eight for the Cyclones. Iowa State hit 15-of-32 first-half shots (46.9 percent), including 6-of-11 three-pointers.

Nebraska will continue its five-game stretch against Big 12 North division foes when the Huskers travel to Kansas State to take on the No. 18 Wildcats on Tuesday. Tip-off at Bramlage Coliseum is set for 7 p.m. with live television coverage by FSN Kansas City. A live audio broadcast will also be available for free on Huskers.com from the Husker Sports Network.
