Lincoln ? The Nebraska women’s soccer team dueled No. 16 Colorado to a tie on the stat sheet, but the Buffs prevailed on the field with a 1-0 win over the Huskers in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championship in San Antonio, Texas, on Wednesday. NU moved to 10-9-1 with the loss and now awaits word on a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. CU improved to 14-3-3.
Both teams battled windy, humid conditions at Blossom Soccer Stadium to post 13 shots each. Temperatures reached the high 70s with wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour, but NU earned six shots on goal to double CU’s total of three. The Huskers fought the Buffs to a 0-0 tie at halftime, but CU struck quickly in the second frame with a goal in the 50th minute. Forward Gianna DeSaverio crossed a ball from the right side that Big 12 Defender of the Year Michelle Wenino headed toward NU goalkeeper Brittany Pfeil. Pfeil appeared to make the save to her right, but the ball had already crossed the line.
The Nebraska offense was led by junior forward Shay Powell, who posted five shots against CU and directed three on goal. Sophomore defender Brittany Goosen had two shots, including one goal, while Selenia Iacchelli and Aysha Jamani also notched shots on goal.
Pfeil made two saves for the Husker defense, while CU goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski was forced to make six. Nebraska earned six corner kicks.
The NCAA announces the 64-team field for the national tournament on Monday.
