Session 1: Huskers In Fourth After First Day of Competition

Lincoln - The Nebraska swimming and diving team sits in a tie for fourth place after Session 1 of 7 of the Husker Invitational on Thursday at the Devaney Natatorium. The 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay were completed on the evening.

The Huskers took home fifth and sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, netting the team 36 and 34 points, respectively. The team of Jenny Toler, Jess Andrews, Kelsey Grushecky and Jenna Stroud finished fifth with a time of 3:31.73, while the relay team of Mariah Hutchinson, C.J. Bray, Meredith Matthies and Caroline Shea finished sixth with a time of 3:32.57. Both times were season-bests for the Huskers.

Three swimmers also scored in the 1,650-yard freestyle, led by sophomore Brandie Kavalec with a ninth-place finish with a time of 17:31.70. Anna Wheeler beat her previous career-best time in the race by over 17 seconds as she finished 16th with a time of 17:40.00. Mailene Leslie finished just behind in 17th place with a time of 17:42.17.

The Huskers are in a tie for fourth place with 95 points through two events. Rice leads the meet with 135 points, followed by North Texas with 130 and Iowa State with 101.

The four-day meet continues tomorrow with preliminary races starting at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5 p.m.
