Lincoln-The Nebraska women’s soccer team applied heavy offensive pressure on Baylor, but the Bears escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Huskers at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field in Waco, Texas, on Sunday. The loss is NU’s first since Sept. 5th and snaps its five-game winning streak while dropping the Huskers’ record to 3-1 in the Big 12 and 7-5-1 overall. Baylor picks up its first conference victory to move to 1-1-1 in the league and 5-5-2 overall.
The Huskers dominated play the majority of the game, racking up 24 total shots and putting seven on goal, including outshooting the Bears 16 to two in the second half. Baylor managed seven shots and put three on goal, but found the back of the net in the fifth minute. Bear goalkeeper Gianna Quintana took a free kick that midfielder Christina Clark redirected into the box to midfielder Bethany Johnston, who scored. Nebraska was unable to put a shot past Quintana the rest of the first period or Courtney Seelhorst in the second half. The BU defense has allowed just one goal, to No. 7 Texas A&M, in its three Big 12 games.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Huskers cranked up the offense and nearly equalized the game with a Michaella Fulmer header in the 65th minute off an Aysha Jamani cross. Fulmer’s shot bounced off the crossbar before leaving the field of play, as the Huskers racked up 13 corners in the second stanza and forced Seelhorst to make six saves in the period. NU had 14 total corners and allowed none for Baylor.
Senior midfielder Selenia Iacchelli led the Husker offense with eight shots and four on goal, while Shay Powell and Anna Caniglia both notched four shots. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Pfeil collected two saves.
Nebraska continues its road trip with a 7:30 p.m. match with No. 7 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, on Friday.
