Peetz Muscles Huskers Past Sooners

Lincoln - Junior defender Carly Peetz used a header to find the back of the net in the 72nd minute and muscle the Nebraska women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma at the John Crain Field in Norman, Okla., on Friday. The Huskers pick up their first road victory of the season and moved to 9-7-1 overall in the process and 5-3 in the Big 12.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Junior defender Anna Caniglia and senior midfielder Aysha Jamani combined some precise passing in the corner to give Caniglia a chance to cross the ball and Peetz was the benefactor. Caniglia took the corner and touched it out to Jamani, who passed the ball right back to her. Caniglia backtracked toward midfield before launching a cross that found Peetz in the middle of the box. Peetz was wide open, as the Sooner defense was trying to draw her offside, and she headed the ball past OU goalkeeper Traci Dickenson.

The goal was Peetz’s second of the season, with both coming off set plays. She scored against Missouri after senior Selenia Iacchelli took a free kick from midfield. Caniglia and Jamani also have put up points in the same fashion this season. Jamani scored against Texas after using a give-and-go with Caniglia off a corner. Friday’s assist was Caniglia’s third and Jamani’s second of the season.

The Sooners pushed the Huskers with a back-and-forth match for most of the contest. Both teams notched seven shots in the first half, but Nebraska earned 13 to OU’s seven in the second half to post a 20-14 overall shot advantage. Both teams had six shots on goal. NU posted a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Offensively, Jamani earned four shots, directing two on net, while Michealla Fulmer came off the bench with four shots of her own. Peetz, Iacchelli, freshman Molly Thomas and senior Sari Raber all took two shots. On the defensive side of the ball, goalkeeper Brittany Pfeil made five saves to collect her third shutout of the season, and second straight. She has not allowed a goal in 184 minutes of action. Nebraska also posts two consecutive shutouts in Big 12 play for the first time since 2005.

The Huskers return to action with a 1 p.m. game at No. 9 Oklahoma State on Sunday. Live stats, audio and video will be available through Okstate.com.
