Aumueller Caps Tournament Run with Back Draw Title

The Nebraska men’s tennis team had two players in action Monday, in the final round of the ITA Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., as Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim battled for the doubles bracket championship, while Aumueller also played for a shot at the singles back draw title.

After being knocked out of the singles main draw bracket in the first round, Aumueller dropped to the consolation round where he won his next five matches to capture the back draw title. The true freshman defeated Ken Nordheim (Saint Louis) 6-2, 6-2, in the final on Monday.

In the doubles main draw final, Lindheim and Aumueller’s run at the championship ended with a loss to Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov (OklahomaState) 8-2. Oleksandr and Nedovyesov were the tournament’s No. 1 overall doubles seed and were the No. 10 ranked doubles team in the nation.

Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott was pleased with the way his freshmen performed against some of the nation’s top players at this weekend’s tournament.

“The play of our freshmen at this week’s tournament was unbelievable,” McDermott said. “They played extremely well. It also showed them what they have to do to compete with some of the best talent in the country.”

The Huskers will conclude their fall season at the University of Texas Fall tournament beginning Friday, Oct. 31.
