Salt Lake City, Utah - Junior Wiveca Swarting of the Nebraska women's tennis team won the ITA Central Regional Tournament singles Main Draw title on Sunday by default over Arkansas' Anouk Tigu. The Razorback coaching staff made the decision not to play Tigu with its player's best interest in mind.
Swarting defeated two ranked opponents on her way to the title, including No. 93 Ana-Maria Constantinescu of Oklahoma and No. 96 Kristina Doerr of BYU. Swarting also defeated the nation's top-ranked player, Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas, by default.
“Wiv has put extra time into her fitness and it paid off in a tournament like this where players are required to play several high quality matches in a row,” NU Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. “I believe her fitness helped her through the semifinal and was a possible factor in the decision of her opponent's default in the final. (Coach) Scott (Jacobson) and I are very proud of our entire Husker team and look forward to watching Wiveca compete at the National Indoors in less than three weeks.”
Swarting will play in the National Indoor Tournament in Charlottesville, Va., Nov. 6-9.
