Husker Freshmen Reach Final at Regional Championships

The Nebraska men’s tennis team will have two competitors playing in Monday’s final rounds of the ITA Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.  Benedikt Lindheim and Christopher Aumueller advanced to the final of the doubles bracket, while Aumueller will also participate in the finals of the consolation singles bracket.

 

Sunday’s semifinal matchup in the doubles bracket was a battle between two Husker teams.  Aumueller and Lindheim defeated fellow Huskers David Bendheim and Calin Paar, 5-2, after Paar retired from the match because of an injury. Head coach Kerry McDermott has been impressed with the way his two freshmen have been performing at this weekend’s tournament.

 

“Our two freshmen are having an unbelievable tournament,” McDermott said.  “Our freshmen are playing lights out and hopefully they can take the tournament title Monday.”

 

The freshmen duo will face the team of Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov (OklahomaState) at 1:30 p.m. CT.  Byrnes and Nedovyesov are the No. 1 seeded team in the doubles bracket.

 

Since losing his first match of the tournament, Aumueller has rattled off four strait victories to reach the finals of the consolation bracket.  Aumueller easily defeated Connor Smith (Arkansas) 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals before taking down Eric West (Saint Louis) 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the final.  Aumueller will face Ken Nordheim (Saint Louis) in Monday’s final match beginning at 10 a.m. CT.

 

David Bendheim and Calin Paar both had their tournament runs end in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw on Sunday. Bendheim was defeated by Sergey Avdeyev (Oklahoma) 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3, while Paar was defeated by Maor Zirkin (Drake) 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
