Swarting Advances to Finals of Regional Tournament

Salt Lake City, Utah - Wiveca Swarting of the Nebraska women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Main Draw of the ITA Central Regional Tournament on Saturday. Swarting will play in the final on Sunday, and has qualified for the National Indoor Tournament Nov. 6-9 in Charlottesville, Va.

NU's Madeleine Geibert lost in the quarterfinals of the Main Draw, while the doubles team of Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt lost in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. Nebraska assistant coach Hayden Perez was pleased with the effort of all of NU's players on the day.

"It was a great day for the Husker tennis team," Perez said. "Coach (Scott) Jacobson and I are so proud of the efforts by everyone. The three freshmen and Wiveca all stepped up and competed very hard."

Swarting beat the No. 1 seed and the nation's top-ranked player, Arkansas' Aurelija Miseviciute, by default after a coach's decision not to play. She advanced to the semifinals to play Ana-Maria Constantinescu of Oklahoma, who beat NU's Madeleine Geibert in the quarterfinal round, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

"The difference in Madeleine's match was literally just a few points," Perez said. "It was a shame someone had to lose. They played the match of the tournament."

Swarting met Constantinescu in the semifinals, where she battled to a straight-set victory, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the finals.

"Wiveca did a great job of staying focused in her match and really did great to close it out in a very tough second set," Perez said.

Swarting will play Arkansas' Anouk Tigu in the finals on Sunday.
