Lincoln-Senior midfielder Sari Raber put the Huskers up early with a goal in the 23rd minute, but No. 15 Colorado scored two second-half goals to claim a 2-1 win in front of more than 500 fans at the Nebraska Soccer Field on Friday. With the loss, Nebraska falls to 7-7-1 and 3-3-0 in the Big 12, while the Buffs improve to 12-2-2 and 6-1-1 in the conference.
NU came out with early offensive pressure, outshooting CU 7-3 in the first half and notching a goal midway through the period. Senior defender Lindsay Poehling sent a high cross from the deep right corner that junior forward Shay Powell knocked out of midair. The ball caromed off the post and across the mouth of the goal and Raber punched it in for her second goal of the season. The assist was Powell’s third of the season and ties her for the team lead.
Colorado held possession for most of the second half, tallying 19 total shots in the game to Nebraska’s 10. The Buffs' Nikki Marshall poked a ball past NU goalkeeper Brittany Pfeil in the 54th minute off a low cross from Gianna DeSaverio and found the back of the net again in the 86th minute after beating a NU defender in a tussle inside the 18-yard box. Marshall had three of CU’s six shots on goal, while the Huskers managed two shots on goal.
Pfeil collected four saves on the day to pace the defense and freshman forward Molly Thomas notched three shots to lead the NU offense. Raber earned both of NU’s shots on goal, while Powell also took two shots.
Nebraska returns to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match with Texas Tech at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The Huskers will honor their six seniors on the squad on Sunday, as the match is the final home contest of the season.
