Midland, Texas - The Nebraska women’s tennis team sent three players to the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, this weekend. Friday’s action saw freshmen Madeleine Geibert and Mary Weatherholt and junior Wiveca Swarting go a combined 5-0 in singles play, with all three advancing to the round of 16 which will begin on Saturday.
Geibert, who received the No. 5 seed in the tournament, got a first-round bye before playing Ana Guzman from Rice. Geibert battled back from a set down to take the match in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, (10-5). She will play Bianca Johcimsen from BoiseState in Saturday’s third-round match.
Weatherholt breezed through her two matches on the day. She defeated Katerina Mlcochova of UT-Arlington in the first round 6-1, 6-0 before cruising past Pepperdine’s Tania Rice 6-1, 6-1. Weatherholt will take on a Big 12 opponent in her third-round match Saturday in Baylor’s Karolina Filipiak.
Swarting also won her two matches fairly easily on the day. Swarting got past Sureena Weir of TylerJunior College, 6-2, 6-1, in round one, then beat Texas Tech’s Kyla Coleman 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. She’ll face Anastasia Dracheva from Miami (Ohio) on Saturday.
“It was a strong first day for us,” said NU Assistant Coach Hayden Perez. “Mary and Wiveca got off to great starts and never let up. Madeline found herself down early, then had to dig deep and fight hard. She did a great job.”
The Huskers will be in action on Saturday with third and fourth round matches before the tournament’s conclusion on Sunday.
