Huskers Dominant at Jayhawk Invitational

Lawrence, Kan. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team took three players to the Jayhawk Invitational this weekend, where the three rolled to a combined 11-1 singles and 1-0 doubles record. Freshmen Mary Weatherholt and Madeleine Geibert won the Flight Blue and Flight Jayhawk titles, respectively, while junior Wiveca Swarting took home the consolation title in Flight Jayhawk.

 

Both Weatherholt and Geibert cruised through their respective brackets, both winning each of their matches in straight sets. Weatherholt defeated Kansas’ Maria Martinez in the final of Flight Blue, 6-0, 6-0, while Geibert dispatched another Big 12 foe, Iowa State’s Erin Karonis, 6-1, 6-3 in the final of Flight Jayhawk.

 

Swarting lost a tough opening-round match against Kansas State’s Antea Huljev, 7-5, 2-6, (11-9), but rebounded in the consolation bracket, winning her next three matches in straight sets. Swarting defeated Air Force’s Christen Monreal 6-1, 6-4 in the consolation final.

 

Geibert and Swarting also teamed up on the first day of the tournament in doubles play. The duo only played one match and beat Wichita State’s Torrie Browning and Anna Egorova 8-4.

 

The Huskers have had an exceptional fall season thus far, with a singles record of 31-9 and a doubles record of 13-3 in two tournaments. NU will look to continue its success in two weeks at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, from Oct. 10-12.
