Bendheim Finishes Strong Weekend to Lead Huskers

The Nebraska men’s tennis team concluded play this weekend at the University of Virginia Ranked 1-1 Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. Junior David Bendheim provided the shining moments for the Huskers by collecting three victories and winning the A-1 singles backdraw. After dropping his first match on Friday, Bendheim bounced back to beat Matt Kecki (USC) 6-2, 6-2 and Steve Johnson (USC) 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday, before beating Jack Poldma (USC) by default on Sunday.

“Saturday was a very good day, especially for David Bendheim,” NU head coach Kerry McDermott said of the improving Huskers. “He’s played with a lot more confidence, which is good.”

In the A-2 singles bracket, Francois Van Impe was defeated by Oscar Podlewski (Elon) 6-1, 7-5, and David Nguyen (UVa.) 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 on Saturday. Playing in the main draw, Calin Paar was defeated by Houston Barrick (UVa.) 6-4, 6-4 and then fell to Ivan Salec 1-6, 6-3, 12-10 to move his record to 2-2 on the weekend. Paar was then beat by Austen Childs (Louisville) 6-4, 6-3 in the A-2 backdraw on Sunday. In his only match on Saturday, Hendrik Stahmer was defeated by Alexandr Seleznev (Old Dominion) 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles play, David Bendheim and Hendrik Stahmer fell to Pinsky and Carleton (Duke) 8-4. Davey Sandgren and Smith (Tennessee) beat Calin Paar and Francios Van Impe 8-3. In Sunday’s doubles play, Stahmer and Bendheim defeated Concik and Fago of Tennessee 9-8. Also Sunday, Sacks and Nguyen (USC) beat Paar and Van Impe 8-4.
