Then Nebraska men's tennis team started play Friday at the University of Virginia Ranked 1-1 Tournament. Four Huskers were in action when matches started at 9 a.m. in the morning. In singles play, the Huskers recorded an overall record of 3-3.
One of the bright spots on the opening-day of the tournament was sophomore Calin Paar. In singles play, Paar defeated Davey Sandgren (Tennessee) 6-4, 6-4. Paar then moved onto the second round where he defeated Gary Sacks (USC) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Sacks entered the tournament ranked No. 43 in the nation.
Coach Kerry McDermott said he was pleased with Calin's performance Friday, as well as the rest of the teams.
"This is a very good tournament," McDermott said. "I was pleased with our play today, especially Calin (Paar). He is playing really well. He is showing the rest of his teammates how to win. He doesn't have a whole lot of weapons, but he fights hard."
In other singles results, Hendrik Stahmer was defeated by Matt Kecki (USC) in the A-1 singles bracket 6-2, 7-5. After having a first-round bye, David Bendheim fell to Drew Courtney (UVa.) 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the A-1 bracket. Francois Van Impe defeated Dylan Arnould (Duke) 6-3, 6-3. Van Impe was then defeated by Austen Childs (Louisville) in the second round 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles play, Calin Paar and Francios Van Impe defeated Wietoska/Arnould (Duke) 8-1. Singer/Courtney (UVa.) defeated David Bendheim and Hendrik Stahmer 8-3.
