Jamani?s Two Goals Push Huskers Past NDSU

Lincoln-For the third time in the past four games a Nebraska player scored twice, as senior forward Aysha Jamani put two in the back of the net to propel NU to a 3-0 win over North Dakota State at the Nebraska Soccer Field on Friday. The win pushed the Huskers’ unbeaten streak to four games while improving their season record to 3-4-1.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Fellow forward Shay Powell notched two scores against UAB on Sept. 7 and followed up with another two against Oakland last Sunday, but Friday was Jamani’s turn with goals in the 35th and 49th minutes. The Calgary, Alberta, native scored her first after Powell flicked a ball to the deep left corner. Jamani ran down the ball, dribbled by two defenders and put a low shot past Bison goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch.

 

Jamani was the beneficiary of a penalty kick in the 49th minute, after a NDSU defender fouled Colleen Goetzmann in the box. Jamani’s shot found the net uncontested after she shot left and the goalkeeper faked the other direction. The two-goal game is the first for Jamani since 2005, after she sat out the majority of the 2007 campaign with an injury.

 

Powell added an insurance goal in the 65th minute for her fifth score in the last four games. Senior defender Lindsay Poehling sent a scorching cross that the speedy Powell put past Bertsch. Powell leads the Huskers with 11 points on five goals and one assist after the goal and assist today. She has already matched her point total from last season, just eight games into the year.

 

The NU defense held its fifth consecutive opponent to under 10 shots, as the Bison (3-4-1) could only mount six shots and put two on net. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Pfeil played 82 minutes of shutout soccer before sophomore Jessica Mills finished the game.

 

Nebraska’s offense fell one shot short of reaching the 20-shot plateau for the fifth consecutive game, amassing 19 shots in the contest. The Huskers earned 10 shots on goal and six corner kicks.

 

The Huskers face another first-time opponent, Stephen F. Austin, on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Nebraska Soccer Field.
