Lincoln-Nebraska’s Shay Powell scored twice for the second consecutive game, including the game winner in overtime, to power the Huskers to a 3-2 victory over Oakland at the Nebraska Soccer Field on Sunday. The win moves NU to 2-4 on the season, while the Grizzlies drop to 1-5-1.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
The teams exchanged two-goal halves before the Huskers came out determined in the extra period and ended the game just three minutes in. Powell once again capitalized on her speed to pick off a ball deep in OU territory. A quick move to the goal, a low shot and she had her second goal of the game. Powell now has four goals in the last two games, including two game-winners.
Powell put Nebraska on the board first in the eighth minute with the help of sophomore Brittany Goosen. Powell ran down a long ball from Goosen and took another low shot from the left side of that beat OU goalkeeper Kim Herbst.
Fellow junior Anna Caniglia added to the lead in the 21st minute with a score off a corner kick. With wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour, Caniglia powered a kick into the breeze that curved into the back of the net. Both of her goals this season have come off set plays.
Playing with the wind in the second half, Oakland notched two of their own goals courtesy of Sarah Lynch and Lindsay Blair. The Grizzlies final goal was put in the net after NU goalkeeper Brittany Pfeil made a save, but was unable to secure the rebound. Blair capitalized and scored from point black with less than three minutes left.
Once again the Huskers dominated the game statistically. For the third consecutive contest, NU took more than 20 shots and allowed less than 10 shots for its opponent. Nebraska racked up 22 shots and put 10 on goal against Oakland. Forwards Aysha Jamani and Molly Thomas both contributed two shots on goal, while 10 different Huskers attempted a shot. The NU defense allowed just nine total shots for Oakland, including four shots on goal. Pfeil made two saves, while Herbst had seven. Nebraska earned seven corner kicks to one for Oakland.
The Huskers return to the field on Tuesday to play their game against Drake, which was postponed last Friday because of inclement weather conditions. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Nebraska Soccer Field.
