Huskers Take Home Four Titles at Gopher Invitational

Minneapolis, Minn. - The Nebraska women’s tennis team wrapped up its first fall tournament at the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. on Sunday. The Huskers left with four first-place finishes, and ended the weekend with a 32-11 combined singles and doubles record.

 

Newcomer Kirby Bridges had a hand in two of Nebraska’s four titles, coming away as the Wild Singles Flight champion and Gophers Doubles Flight champion with senior Marianne Cicmanec. The sophomore from Omaha had a perfect 8-0 weekend, including 4-0 in singles play and 4-0 in doubles play.

 

Cicmanec also earned a first-place finish in the Lynx Singles Flight after her opponent, Northern Iowa’s Diana Mendez, couldn’t play in the championship match due to injury. Cicmanec also ended her weekend with a 4-0 singles and 4-0 doubles record.

 

Senior Ashley Finnegan also had a perfect run through the Twins Singles Flight, winning four straight matches on her way to the title, giving the Huskers’ their fourth championship of the tournament.

 

The Huskers continue fall play in two weeks at the Riviera All-American Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. Pre-qualifying starts on Sept. 27, and the tournament runs all the way to Oct. 5.
