Lincoln ? Former University of Nebraska baseball standout Adam Stern will have the honor of representing his country for the second time, as he was selected to the Canadian Olympic Team on Friday. Stern is one of six returning players who helped Team Canada to a fourth-place finish at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Team Canada will gather later this month in Toronto before beginning its pre-Olympic schedule with four games against Team USA in Cary and Durham, N.C. The four-game series begins on Friday, Aug. 1. Canada will also take on the Netherlands in a two-game exhibition series in Beijing before opening its Olympic schedule against the host Chinese on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Stern, who hit .250 with four RBIs and scored nine runs during the 2004 Olympics, has been a staple of the Canadian national program in recent years. His best performance on the international stage came at the 2006 World Baseball Classic when he went 6-for-9 with a double, triple, homer and five RBIs in three games, including a win over Team USA.
This season, Stern hit .221 with a homer and eight RBIs with Triple-A Norfolk before he was recently released by the Orioles organization. Stern has spent parts of three seasons in the Major Leagues, most recently with the Orioles in 2007, after beginning his professional career in the Atlanta Braves organization in 2001.
A third-round pick of the Braves in 2001, Stern played three seasons at Nebraska. He hit .292 with five homers, 47 RBIs and 27 stolen bases to help the Huskers to a Big 12 title and a College World Series appearance in 2001. His best year as a Husker was in 2000, when he hit .356 with 45 RBIs in 60 contests to earn second-team All-Big 12 honors.
