Nebraska to Host 2009 NCAA Volleyball Regional

Lincoln ? The NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee announced that Omaha, Neb., has been selected as one of four NCAA Regional sites in 2009.

The selection marks the second time that Qwest Center Omaha has been chosen to host an NCAA Regional and first since smashing all NCAA postseason attendance records in 2005. That year, the championship match drew 15,119 ? the largest volleyball attendance at the time.  It is the third time that the University of Nebraska volleyball program has hosted a postseason regional since the predetermination of regional sites began in 2003, and the 15th time in program history that Nebraska will host an NCAA Volleyball Regional.

The four largest NCAA volleyball crowds have been at the Qwest Center in Omaha, including an all-time NCAA record of 17,209 for the 2006 national championship match between Nebraska and Stanford.

“When we were selecting these sites, we really wanted to focus on attendance history and attendance potential,” said Marie Robbins, chair of the Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee. “We believe these sites provide a regional balance that can also draw great crowds. They have proven to be great hosts in the past, and we know they will help us continue to grow this championship.”

The three other regional sites for the 2009 season will be the University of Florida, the University of Minnesota and Stanford University. All four regionals will take place on Dec. 11-12, 2009, with the winners advancing to the NCAA National Semifinals and Finals in Tampa, Fla.

The NCAA Volleyball Committee also announced that Colorado State, Penn State, Texas and Washington will host this year’s regionals, set for Dec. 12-13. The NCAA Division I Championship will take place in Omaha at the Qwest Center with the national semifinals on Thursday, Dec. 18, and the national championship match taking place on Saturday, Dec. 20. Tickets for this year’s NCAA Championship in Omaha are on sale now through Ticketmaster outlets and at Ticketmaster.com.
