Huskers Teach Basic Skills at Jr. Red Zone Camp

Lincoln- Members of the Nebraska men’s basketball team spent two hours on Sunday, April 13, helping kids from ages six through 12 learn some of the basic fundamentals of basketball at the Jr. Red Zone basketball clinic.  Over 55 youngsters participated in the event, where having a good attitude and playing hard every play was stressed.

“We had a large number of kids who signed up for the Jr. Red Zone program this year, so Coach Sadler thought it would be a great way to end the season with a short clinic,” said NU Director of Men's Basketball Operations Chris Croft. “It’s a great way for our young fans to interact with the players, say hello, get to know them, and maybe even play some one-on-one with them. It’s also a great way for our players to see first-hand that there are a lot of little kids looking up to them.”

From a basketball standpoint, the youngsters were taught many of the basic fundamentals such as ball-handling, dribbling, passing and shooting. The Husker players were there to add a helping hand when needed.

“We did a lot of offensive fundamental drills,” Croft said. “We tried to get them some interaction with the players, and let them have a fun afternoon.”

Among the players that were helping out at the clinic were Ade Dagunduro, Ryan Anderson, Brandon Richardson, Alonzo Edwards, Mike Diacos, Toney McCray and Ben Nelson.  Along with the Jr. Red Zone members, the players had just as much fun at the clinic.

“It’s a great deal because it’s always a joy to come out here and play around with the kids," said guard Ade Dagunduro. "You always remember when you’re a little kid looking up to some of the older guys playing basketball, so it’s just a fun event for us as players to particpate in."
