Huskers Rout Panthers

Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team won its 11th straight match on Sunday morning over the Northern Iowa Panthers, 4-0. Due to severe weather forecasted to be moving into the region Sunday evening, the format of the match was changed, resulting in the shortened match. NU moved to 11-0 with the victory, while Northern Iowa fell to 7-3.

Both teams agreed to play singles first instead of the normal format of doubles followed by singles. If a team reached four points in singles play then the match would be called as a winner will have been determined. The Huskers took the first four completed singles matches and called the match at that point, allowing the Panthers to leave early to avoid the inclement weather.

“The change in the format didn’t faze the girls at all,” NU assistant coach Hayden Perez said. “They came out very focused and determined today and it showed.”

NU freshman Amber Chandronnait and senior Imke Reimers opened up the scoring on the day for the Huskers, as they each moved to 11-0 on the year in singles play. Chandronnait earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over UNI’s Ashton Schwerin at No. 5 singles while Reimers defeated Meghana Paritala at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2. Wiveca Swarting made it 3-0 Nebraska with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Laia Gonzalez at No. 3 singles, and Abby Buxton clinched the match for the Huskers with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Samantha Schnobel at No. 6 singles. Both Jana Albers at No. 2 and Stephanie Evans at No. 4 were nearly done with their matches, as both were up on their opponents in the second set, but didn’t finish since the team outcomes had been decided.

The Huskers will play their first home conference match next week, as they take on Big 12 and national power Baylor. The Bears are currently 11-1 and are ranked No. 4 in the latest ITA polls.

“Coach (Scott) Jacobson and I have been impressed with our team’s intensity thus far and know it will take us far as we move into the most challenging portion of our schedule,” said Perez. “We look forward to a great week of practice as we face the Big 12’s top team in Baylor.”

The match against Baylor is on Saturday, March 8, at the NebraskaTennisCenter, and has a start time of 10:30 a.m.
