Huskers Pass First Road Test

Ames, Iowa ? The Nebraska women's tennis team passed its first road test of the season on Friday as it defeated Iowa State 6-1 in Ames, Iowa. The Huskers took their first Big 12 match of the season and improved their overall record to 8-0.

Nebraska narrowly missed its eighth consecutive sweep to start the season against the Cyclones, losing its first singles and doubles matches of the season. NU Head Coach Scott Jacobson needless to say was still very pleased with his team's effort in its first match away from Lincoln.

“It's a great start to the Big 12 season,” said Jacobson. “It was our first dual match away from home, and I saw a lot of positives in our play. Our kids played with a lot of heart.”

The Huskers started off by taking two of the three doubles matches, including a pair of 8-2 victories at Nos. 1 and 2. Kara Hickey and Liza Wischer of Iowa State handed the Huskers their first doubles loss of the season at No. 3, as they defeated NU's Amber Chandronnait and Stephanie Evans, 8-4. The Huskers still won the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead.

Nebraska quickly took a 3-0 lead after Wiveca Swarting at No. 3 singles and Abby Buxton at No. 6 singles each recorded 6-2, 6-1 victories. Senior Imke Reimers clinched the match for the Huskers with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles, before ISU's Caitlin Loprinzi defeated Evans at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2, to give the Cyclones their point. Jana Albers and Chandronnait each went three sets before putting away their Cyclone opponent, rounding out the 6-1 Nebraska victory.

The Huskers return to the Nebraska Tennis Center on Sunday at 11 a.m with a match against Southeast Missouri State. The match is the first of five-match homestand for Nebraska before they hit the road again March 20.
