Pieter Smith will join fellow South African Huskers Peter van der Westhuizen, Lehann Fourie and Erwin Schmidt at <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska. Smith will specialize in the 400-meter dash at Nebraska. His personal-time of 46.22 currently ranks as the top time in South Africa this year. Smith's time would place him ninth all-time in the Husker outdoor record book.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Smith finished runner-up in 2006 at the South Africa Junior Championships in the 400 meters and finished in fourth in 2007 at the South Africa University Championships. He also competed at the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, where he placed 11th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.89.

Smith is a projected athlete to compete for South Africa in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
