Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team swept the Illinois State Redbirds 7-0
on Friday at the Nebraska Tennis Center. Using a singles lineup that featured all four NU freshmen and a sophomore, the Huskers displayed their youthful talent and earned their second victory of the year.
Nebraska started the match with three doubles victories, highlighted by the 42nd-ranked duo of Imke Reimers and Jana Albers with an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 position, and the Huskers took an early 1-0 lead.
The Huskers never allowed the Redbirds a chance to come back in singles play, as five of the six Huskers players won in straight sets. Freshman Abby Buxton, seeing her first action of the season, won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles over ISU's Katie O'Riley. NU's three other freshmen each earned wins as well in singles play - Albers at No. 3, Stephanie Evans at No. 4 and Amber Chandronnait at No. 5.
After playing at No. 3 singles the entire season as a freshman and in NU's first match last week against Creighton, sophomore Wiveca Swarting played her first-ever match outside the No. 3 slot, as she faced ISU's Veronique Parke-Bedard at No. 2 singles. Swarting, who turned 21 on Friday, had no troubles adjusting to her new role, winning 6-2, 6-2.
Reimers, the team's lone senior and only upperclassman in the singles lineup on the day, won 6-2 in the first set but had trouble putting the Redbirds' Katri Miller away in the second. However, Reimers took the last two games of the second set and won, 7-5.
The Huskers have a day off on Saturday before heading back to the Tennis Center to take on Colorado State on Sunday. First serve for the match against CSU will be at 11 a.m.
