Morgantown, W. Va. ? Despite a solid day in smallbore, the Nebraska rifle team fell to West Virginia, 4,615-4,599, on Friday. It was the first half of a two-match weekend for NU and Nebraska’s first match since a Nov. 29 win at Air Force.
Senior Kirsten Weiss starred for the Huskers, capturing a share of the individual smallbore title with WVU’s Tommy Santelli, as both totaled a 579 on the event. Weiss also shot a 569 in air rifle.
With Weiss as the leading shooter, the Huskers started strong in smallbore, putting up a score of 2,289 to the Mountaineers’ 2,297. Sophomore Amanda Jeffries placed fourth (574), while senior Kim Chrostowski and sophomore Christine Costello followed close behind with scores of 569 and 567, respectively. Freshman Elisha LaFond contributed a mark of 565, and freshman Ryann McGough added a 564.
LaFond led the way in air rifle with a third-place showing and a 580 mark. In addition, Costello finished fourth after a score of 579, helping NU to a team score of 2,310.
“Usually our air shooting is strong, but we seemed to crumble under the pressure,” Head Coach Morgan Hicks said. “We lost to WVU in both guns by a very small margin. It is difficult to come off a long break, but I expected us to pull ahead with our stronger gun, air rifle.”
