Jackson, Miss.-The No. 2 Nebraska bowling team claimed its third tournament title of the season at the Capital City Collegiate Classic on Sunday afternoon. NU rolled a total pinfall of 9,060 in the two-day tournament, topping No. 1 Vanderbilt for the second time in the 2007-08 season.
Freshman Katie Ann Sopp led the Huskers to victory with a collegiate-career high 219 average for seventh place. The Capital City Collegiate Classic marks the third time Sopp has earned a top-10 finish.
"Katie Ann has really been a blessing," Nebraska Coach Bill Straub said. "She's just a kid and now we are not only asking her to do well, but we have her in a very important position. She's in the number one spot at competitions and she has to be pretty consistent so Coach Klempa and I can get a good read on the lanes. Because she is so consistent, she has been a real benefit to the team, not just with scoring but helping Coach Klempa and I do our jobs."
Freshman Christine Bator and Cassandra Leuthold also earned their third top-10 finishes on the season, tying for 10th place with season-high averages of 214. Senior Lindsay Baker capped off the Huskers' accolades with a 13th-place finish and a season-high 208 average.
"We have seven freshmen on the team this season and we finished the fall semester with three tournament titles," Straub said. "This is very encouraging. All of our young people are not acting their age and that's a big plus for us."
The Capital City Collegiate Classic is the last tournament for the Huskers in the fall semester. NU will return to action on Jan. 18 for the three-day Ozark Invitational in Springfield, Mo.
