The Nebraska football team was back on the practice fields Tuesday in preparation for the final Husker home game of the 2007 season as Nebraska takes on KansasState this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
The game marks the final contest inside Memorial Stadium for 29 seniors and Defensive Coordinator Kevin Cosgrove noted how important it is to send the group out with a victory.
“They’ve got a lot of pride,” Cosgrove said. “It’s been a tough year, and I know it’s very important for them to go out the right way.”
The Husker defense will face significant obstacles on Senior Day, as it will go against the Wildcat offense and their two big playmakers, quarterback Josh Freeman and receiver Jordy Nelson.
“He’s a big, strong quarterback,” Cosgrove said of Freeman. “He’s really developed within that system and he’s become an outstanding quarterback. He’s thrown for over 63 percent, has tremendous accuracy and a big, strong arm.”
So far this season Freeman has thrown for 2,521 yards and 12 touchdowns. One of his favorite targets is Nelson, who has 1,222 yards receiving and eight touchdowns to go along with two punt return touchdowns and two passing touchdowns on the year.
“(Nelson) is a great player,” Cosgrove said. “He’s had a lot of big plays not only at receiver, but at punt returner as well. He’s a tremendous football player, and we’re certainly going to have to keep our eye on him.”
Helping the Huskers in that endeavor will be senior linebacker Bo Ruud, who Cosgrove said will return to the NU lineup for his final home game after missing the last three contests due to a non-contact injury he suffered during the opening possession of Nebraska’s game against Texas A&M on Oct. 20.
Fans unable to attend the 289th consecutive sellout inside Memorial Stadium this Saturday can catch the action live on the Versus network beginning at 11:30 a.m.
