Wichita State Sweeps Lady Toppers

Behind double-doubles from Emily Stockman and Sara Lungren, the Wichita State Shockers advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Volleyball Tournament with a 30-21, 30-19, 30-25 sweep of Western Kentucky in first-round action at the NU Coliseum on Friday.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Stockman recorded a match-high 16 kills and added 11 blocks, while Lungren finished with 12 kills and 11 digs. It was Stockman’s 21st double-double of the season and Lungren’s 10th.

 

Wichita State, which improved to 27-5 on the season, hit .305 for the match and had a statistical edge in nearly every category while sweeping an opponent for the 22nd time this season.

 

Megan Argabright led WKU with 11 kills on 33 swings, while Julia Noe added 31 assists and five aces, one off her season high. The Lady Toppers ended their season with a 27-9 record.

 

In game one, WichitaState jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead before WKU pulled to within two on four occasions ? including 14-12. The Lady Topper would get no closer though, as a 6-1 run put the Shockers comfortably on top 20-13. Melissa Granville closed out the 30-21 win with an ace. Game one was a defensive battle, as the teams combined for 49 digs.

 

Wichita State again used a strong early run to take control of game two, as the Shockers’ 7-1 run resulted in an 11-4 lead. WSU extended the lead to double digits for the first time at 19-9 and led by as many as 12 before cruising to the 30-19 victory. The Shockers hit a match-high .484 in game two, marking the first time they hit over .450 in 23 games.

 

Game three saw a back-and-forth battle early until WichitaState turned a 7-6 lead into a 12-7 advantage with a 5-1 run. WesternKentuckyUniversity would not go quietly, pulling ahead at 20-19 with a 4-1 spurt of its own. The game remained close and was tied at 22-all before WichitaState scored four consecutive points en route to winning 8 of the final 11 points and taking the game, 30-25.

 

Wichita State advances to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, where it will face the winner of the Nebraska-SouthDakotaState match at 5 p.m. (Central) on Saturday.
