Kuna, Idaho - The Nebraska women's golf team fired the best round of the day with a 12-over par 300 in the second round to charge to the lead at the 2007 Bronco Fall Invitational on Monday.
The Huskers, who closed the day with a 36-hole total of 618, enter Tuesday's final round with a three-shot lead over Big 12 Conference foe KansasState (621). The Wildcats fired a 311 for the best score in the opening round, while NU's first-round 318 was good for second after the first 18 holes.
Nebraska surged to the lead in the second round, as its 300 was 10 strokes better than KSU's 310. The Wildcats' second-round total matched the second-best round of the tournament for any team. Wyoming also managed a 310 in the second round to close the first day of action in third place at 633, 15 strokes behind the Huskers.
The Huskers produced a total team effort through the first 36 holes, as all five players in the NU lineup head into the final round in the top five on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Allison Stewart led the opening-day charge for NU with her second-round 73. Stewart, a native of Vermillion, S.D., added an 81 in the first round to head into the final round in sole possession of second place at 154.
Stewart's opening round was somewhat indicative of the early playing conditions on the 6,193-yard, par-72 layout at the Falcon Crest Golf Club. Early morning frost and high winds pushed back the start time for the tournament by 30 minutes. As the day progressed, scores continued to fall.
Defending tournament individual champion Kate White enters the final round in the hunt for a repeat crown. The Husker sophomore from Waukegan, Ill., fired rounds of 79 and 76 to finish in a tie for third place at 155. KansasState's Michelle Regan leads the tournament with a 151 through 36 holes.
Husker hometown favorite Elli Brown (77-80), a senior from Meridian, Idaho, is within striking distance of the title along with NU teammates JC Stevenson (81-76) and Megan Place (82-75). All three Huskers sit in a tie for fifth place at 157.
The 2007 Bronco Fall Invitational concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Central time.
