Los Angeles, Calif. - Nebraska senior Imke Reimers was knocked out of the Riviera All-American Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif., on Wednesday. Reimers, who had the No. 7 seed going into the tournament, was defeated by Florida's Anastasia Revzina, 6-3, 7-5, in the opening round of the qualifying draw on Tuesday, and was bumped into the consolation draw. In the first round of consolation play, she defeated Stanford's Whitney Deason, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. On Wednesday, Reimers lost to Northwestern's Samantha Murray, 6-1, 6-3, and was knocked out of the tournament.
Reimers competed at the tournament despite just
coming off a sprained ankle which sidelined her from practice for 10
days leading up to the tournament.
She played well in the first match against Revzina, but was unable to capitalize and pull off a victory.
"She put herself in a position to win," NU assistant coach Hayden Perez said. "But this was her first match this season against outside competition and I think that was the difference."
Reimers managed to fight off three match points in the second set, trailing 5-4 and then 6-5, before Revzina took the last game for a 7-5 victory.
Reimers was moved to the consolation bracket, and was back on the court later that day as she defeated Deason in three sets. After being down 4-3 in the final set, Reimers smashed two aces to tie the match at 4-4, and used the momentum to take the final two games.
"Imke was able to make a few adjustments from her match in the morning and was able to capitalize on many of the game points she had in this match," Perez said. "(Deason) was a very strong player but Imke applied a lot of pressure on her late in the match and really dictated play well."
Reimers played Murray in the second round of the consolation draw Wednesday afternoon, where she was unable to build anything from the start, losing 6-1, 6-3. Perez said that Reimers was disappointed, but was already looking ahead to the Huskers' next tournament, at the ITA Central Regional Tournament from Oct. 17-21.
