<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Lincoln ? The Nebraska soccer team started its second consecutive road trip to Texas on the right foot as the Huskers used an offensive outburst to defeat LamarUniversity 4-0 on Friday in Beaumont, Texas.
The Huskers (5-5-3) racked up 44 shots, including 26 in the first half, on their way to scoring three first-half goals to put the game out of reach early. The Huskers’ 44 shots were the most in a game since NU recorded 44 in an 11-0 win over Drury on Sept. 3, 2000. Nebraska put half their total shots on goal as 22 of their shots found their way towards the net. NU’s 22 shots on goal were the most since Nebraska had 22 against Belmont in a 7-0 win on Sept. 6, 2002. NU’s defense would not be out done though, as the Huskers allowed the Cardinals (0-10-0) just three shots. NU capitalized on 10 corner kicks to Lamar’s two.
Three Husker freshmen scored their first career goal as NU got on the board early. Sophomore defender Carly Peetz scored in the ninth minute off a Sari Raber pass, while freshman midfielder Anna White found the back of the net in the 29th minute, courtesy of Selenia Iacchelli. Freshman forward Jaclyn White capped a three-goal first half for Nebraska as she scored in the 39th minute on an assist from fellow freshman forward Michaella Fulmer. NU put the finishing touches on the game in the 66th minute when Fulmer scored her own goal with the assist being credited to another freshman forward, Alexa Cardona.
Nebraska’s defense was just as dominant as its offense as the Huskers allowed only three shots, all of which came in the second half. NU gave up two shots on goal in the match. Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Mills had an easy day as she recorded no saves in the first half. Sophomore Brittany Pfeil gained valuable minutes in the second half and made two saves. Lamar goalkeeper Kelsie Binetti made 18 saves in the game, including 10 in the first half. Her 18 saves fell one shy of breaking the single game saves record by an NU opponent. Heather Friedman of Arkansas-Little Rock notched 19 saves against the Huskers in an 11-0 loss on Aug. 27, 2000.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
The game was an offensive eruption for the Husker freshmen as they recorded 22 of the teams’ 44 shots. Jaclyn White added six shots, four on goal, to go with her goal, while junior midfielder Sari Raber led the Huskers with seven shots, three on goal and one assist. Fulmer and Cardona both recorded five shots each. Both also recorded their first career assists in the game, while Fulmer, Jaclyn White and Anna White all recorded their first career points in the match.
The Huskers continue their time in Texas with a noon showdown on Sunday with Texas Tech in Lubbock.
