Huskers Duel Aztecs to 0-0 Stalemate

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Lincoln ? The Nebraska soccer team battled brisk fall conditions and a stout San DiegoState defense on Sunday afternoon, as the Huskers tied the Aztecs 0-0 after two overtimes at the Nebraska Soccer Field.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

Despite the scoreless affair, Nebraska generated the bulk of the offense. Showing no ill effects of playing their third game in five days, the Huskers (2-0-2) dominated control of the ball as they recorded 24 shots while only allowing seven for the Aztecs (1-1-2). NU had 10 shots on goal to SDSU’s four and racked up eight corners to SDSU’s one.

The Huskers had several golden opportunities, but failed to find the back of the net on any of them. Early pressure came from junior Selenia Iacchelli as she put two shots on goal, along with freshman Colleen Goetzmann. Offensively, junior Aysha Jamani led the way for the Huskers again. She notched five shots in the game, one of which was on goal, and applied heavy pressure early in the first overtime.

Perhaps the Huskers best chance to score came midway through the first overtime. Freshman Michaella Fulmer made an excellent pass at midfield that sprung junior Sari Raber for a breakaway. Raber battled an Aztec defender and put a high shot to the left corner. SDSU goalkeeper Aubree Southwick made a diving attempt and missed, but the ball skimmed over the crossbar. Raber had three shots in the game.

Freshman Jessica Mills recorded her second shutout at home this season as she continues a torrid start to her career. Mills recorded four saves in 110 minutes of action, while Southwick had 10.

After four games in a week, The Huskers get a break before heading to Los Angeles for the USC Tournament next weekend. NU faces Tennessee on Friday at 4 p.m. and Georgia on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in tournament play.
