Nebraska remained unbeaten on the year by notching a 2-1 victory over MissouriState at the Nebraska Soccer Field on Friday night in front of more than 400 fans.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The Huskers ran their record to 2-0-1 on goals from sophomore Shay Powell and junior Sari Raber. The match up was essentially won on Nebraska’s early offensive success as the Huskers registered two first-half goals after being shut out in the first 45 minutes in their first two contests. NU recorded 12 shots in the match to MSU’s 11. Nebraska had a slight advantage in corner kicks 7-5, while both teams recorded 14 fouls.

The difference maker proved to be the Huskers’ pressure early in the match. Junior Aysha Jamani made a high arcing cross from the right side that Raber and a Bear opponent battled for possession. Raber got the advantage and beat MSU goalkeeper Jackie Jasper to put NU up in the seventh minute. The goal was Raber’s second on the year as she recorded two shots on goal in the game.

The Huskers did not back down as Powell’s perfectly-placed shot from 30 yards out beat Jasper high to put NU up by two just 23 minutes into the match. The goal was Powell’s second on the year and her second consecutive game with a goal.

The Bears still had fight in them, though, as they battled valiantly back. Caroline Sweeney capitalized one of several close calls as she scored in the 71st minute to cut the deficit to one at 2-1. An NU foul set up a free kick on the left side. MSU’s Jordan Reppell put a high cross in and a scrum followed. Sweeney came up with the loose ball and found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Mills showcased another stellar performance in net for the Huskers. Mills recorded four saves in the game, bringing her goals-against average on the season to 0.65.

The Huskers continue their home stand with a 1 p.m. showdown with San DiegoState on Sunday at the Nebraska Soccer Field.
